Kyo Zon: Coexistence

“Kyo Zon: Coexistence” by Barbara McConkey and Chiyo Sanada — This collaborative series was created for the City of Olympia’s ‘Here Today’ Temporary Outdoor Public Art Project. In a fusion of the ancient art of Japanese calligraphy and the modern art of digital painting, these works of art use abstract imagery and written words to express the interconnectedness of humanity and celebrate the bond between Olympia and its Sister City, Yashiro, Japan. Fourteen large-scale works of art were digitally printed onto outdoor banner fabric, stretched onto handmade bamboo scrolls, and ‘planted’ among the foliage of the Yashiro Japanese Garden in Olympia, WA The art was on temporary display in the garden for two months during the summer of 2006.Copyright 2006, Barbara McConkey & Chiyo Sanada.
